Formula 1 cars will continue to evolve over time with regulation changes; this is inevitable. However, this years crop of Formula 1 cars aren't particularly pretty due to a ignorantly worded regulation. However, the aesthetics are undoubtably subjective; which brings us to the question: what is the ugliest Formula 1 chassis ever raced?
And when I say ugliest, I don't mean how slow or unsuccessful it was.

Anything with a bridge wing (2007 season maybe?). Especially after the FIA said they couldn't flex under aerodynamic stress and they all had to add those little pillars to keep them from flexing.

I think it's ugly. Stupid 4 wheels in front.

God the MP4-23 is ugly. I think the prettiest cars of the past few seasons had to be the 2009 season when they clamped down on all the little winglets and made the rear wing narrower. The cars looked so clean and sleek.

I agree. It almost looks like a little French mustache.

![]() 02/06/2014 at 17:11 |

For your viewing (dis)pleasure - the Eifelland:
![]() 02/06/2014 at 17:12 |
|
For ugliest I'll do with the '72 Eiffelland, which combines platter wing, random air scoop and view-obstructing rearview mirror in an all-time case of DAFUQ:
and for prettiest I'd go with the early Barnard-era Ferraris:
As simple and clean as they come.

![]() 02/06/2014 at 17:16 |

I agree, but those X wings really were terrible. Banning them "for safety reasons" was such a sham. They were banned because they were UGLY.
![]() 02/06/2014 at 17:17 |
|
I understand the reverence for this monstrosity, and I still consider it ugly. Brilliant? perhaps. Innovative? Certainly. Beautiful? Hell no!
![]() 02/06/2014 at 17:19 |
|
That was the first one that came to my mind. The Eifelland pops up frequently whenever the topic turns to ugly F1 cars.
![]() 02/06/2014 at 17:21 |
|
I vote for the twin wing cars of the mid-80s. Awesome, yes. But they weren't exactly beautiful.
![]() 02/06/2014 at 17:21 |
|
Also, I just realized those are radiators. What an awful design. If you have a minor accident it isn't just wing damage you end up with, you're looking at a DNF-accident. Not to mention if there's a major accident there's BOILING HOT RADIATOR FLUID ALL UP IN YOUR FUCKING FACE.
![]() 02/06/2014 at 17:22 |
|
It certainly seemed innovative, but the reasoning behind the Tyrrell P34 was fundamentaly flawed. They did not have regular access to wind tunnels back in the mid-'70s.
![]() 02/06/2014 at 17:22 |
|
I was watching grainy footage of those racing and it looked like the Ferrari had a hot tub on the back.
![]() 02/06/2014 at 17:23 |

Tyrell was trying new things because racecar. I think that's subjectively attractive.
![]() 02/06/2014 at 17:25 |
|
That's not very aesthetically pleasing.
![]() 02/06/2014 at 17:25 |

Yeah, it's ugly, but I love how the designers were trying crazy solutions. That era seemed to be so much more daring than the modern CAD designs of today.

I couldn't remember whether I was thinking of the Eifelland or Kauhsen, until I googled pictures of both.

I feel like a chassis designer got a hold of one of his son's drawings, and it was this (minus the machine guns, probably).

That Honda is beautiful. Do you know where that picture was taken?
![]() 02/06/2014 at 17:54 |

Well I'm about to piss of a lot people, because I can't stand the look of most 70s F1 cars. While there a lot of reasons why, Tyrrell's chassis's (in this case an 005) have all the design elements I hate. Super high cockpit that rises awkwardly out of the body, a huge airbox, and that fucking snowplow shaped front wing that looks awful.

This is really geeky, but my first exposure to sidecar racing was Ah! My Goddess. I remember checking it out more after that, and coming to the conclusion that it definitely takes a special set of daredevils to pull that off, not to mention ones very in sync.

For a pretty F1 car, I nominate the Eagle Mk.1:
Also the Maserati 250F:

The aerodynamics of #3 leave me curious, that front wing design looks like it would generate lift if anything...

Yep, just the one I was thinking of. It also would have been great if Gillette sponsored it with the Mach 3 brand.

I was looking for the Eiffelland, it makes the driver look like they're sinking into the car. Also that someone put the periscope so they could see out of the thing backwards.
![]() 02/06/2014 at 19:53 |
|
Yep, it worked until too much lightness was added.
![]() 02/06/2014 at 19:55 |

I'm not sure if they had access to wind tunnels, per se, but they were paying attention to aero; hence the reason why there was so much evolution in the rear wings around that time. Reducing the frontal area is an aerodynamically sound idea. It was certainly an interesting solution to fit the rules at the time. I think they would have been a lot more successful if the tire technology would have been better at that time.
The innovation of the car was really not related to the tire configuration, however. It was among the first (if not THE first) F1 car that had an on-board data acquisition system that could upload data for analysis by computer at the shop. A necessary thing when all the electronics around it were constantly failing. ;-)
